Did you know there's an Aldi in Chapel Hill now?! Steff and I are big fans.
In Steff's words: "Aldi can’t be beat for produce and even organic produce! They have an excellent variety of produce and tons of organic options that are much less than Whole Foods or Harris Teeter. As grocery prices rise with inflation, it’s nice to pinch some pennies while still eating right. They have wonderful pantry staples and a whole line of gluten free products as well! I love their selection of cheeses and you can’t beat the everything aisle where you can find fun finds like trunk organizers, candles, or Halloween candy! I personally don’t buy meat or frozen goods there, but love to check off many items from my list at Aldi! "
(This is from Shen) If you're going to go to Aldi, here are a few tips:
- Bring a quarter to use a cart. You push the quarter in at the cart to use it and get the quarter back when you return the cart. Personally, I love that Aldi socially engineers responsibility in this way; it just makes sense. It also cuts down on cost, which enables them to keep food prices low. AND it gives you the opportunity to sprinkle a little kindness by leaving a cart with a quarter in it!
- Bring your own bags (they won't have any!) and/or know that it's perfectly acceptable behavior to grab one of the cardboard containers holding food in the store to use in place of bags. I love how environmentally and financially conscious this is.
- They take credit card! Not that long ago, they didn't (and only accepted debit card if using plastic), but now they do.
One more interesting thing to throw in the mix: Aldi is owned by the same family that owns Trader Joe's. Look around. You may notice some of the same products, just with different packaging.
